Esophageal Diverticulum

An esophageal diverticulum is an outpouching of one or more layers of the esophageal wall; this includes Zenker’s diverticula and epiphrenic diverticula.

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
  • Foul breath
  • The sensation of food regurgitation

Surgical Interventions:

  • Endoscopic diverticulotomy and myotomy

  • Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM)

  • Cricopharyngeal myotomy
